Creating a FB profile picture
How to make the most out of your FaceBook page profile picture
On Facebook (FB) it is difficult to find the information for how FB crops or crunches your 'profile picture' and you may want to utilize the maximum space available for a FB profile picture for your promotion. Here's a sample of how to go about it.
The right size for your profile image
To avoid getting your profile image crunched, the image you upload to your FB profile should not extend a maximum of 200px by 600px.
When uploading your image, if you don't control how FB handles the profile image it will default to the center of the image and create the 50px by 50px thumbnail. What is not very obvious though is that you can control which area of the 200px by 600px image is used by FB as your 50px by 50px thumbnail.
Step by Step:
Create the profile picture at maximum 200px by 600px
Using your preferred design program, overlay a field with the size of 170px by 170px. This will then be the section that you can select in FB for creating the thumbnail.
![]()
On your FB page, click on the profile picture for editing or changing it:

Once your profile picture is inserted will see an "Edit Thumbnail" link below the picture:

Click on "Edit Thumbnail" link, tick off "Scale to fit." and move the picture inside the cropping square until you have it in the desired position.

Click "Save", and your done.
NOTE: Unfortunately Facebook displays profile pictures in a very low quality, nothing one can do about that – at the moment.
